The most constant focus throughout David’s work is the human condition. Sometimes representing a particular person or action, other times mapping entire environments and systems. Using very basic materials and techniques to achieve an often naive representation. The works lend themselves to each other, creating an abstract narrative, each piece acting as a cell in a greater, ongoing story board, taken from David’s observations, experiences and imagination.
"Somewhere between the representation of a thing, and the thing itself. I am interested in double meanings and contradictions. I enjoy the human touch and all the mistakes that come with it. I often work directly onto objects I find, therefore I am not always in full control of what I make, this is very important to me, and I see this as a dialogue between myself and the ever changing environment around me. My work changes day-to-day and is influenced by a multitude of things: expressing ideas, environments and the conditions in which they manifest themselves."
David is developing a range of symbols that he uses with found objects to create a discordant visual language. He displaces objects and motifs to find new meanings to his environment. He uses many different sources and systems to develop his ideas, they can range from travel, map making, geometry and history. Using a collage of ideas and materials collected from contemporary life, David’s work mixes chance and composition. His work includes drawings, prints, collage and artist books. |
